FHWA releases VMS safety report

The US Federal Highway Administration has released a report entitled, The Possible Effects of Commercial Electronic Variable Message Signs (CEVMS) on Driving Safety.

The FHWA believes that the advent of new electronic billboard technologies, in particular the digital Light-Emitting Diode (LED) billboard, necessitates a re-evaluation of current legislation and regulation for controlling outdoor advertising because of concerns they may distract driver distraction. The report reviews research concerning the possible effects on driver safety of CEVMS used for outdoor advertising, including possible attention and distraction effects. It includes an investigation of applicable research methods and techniques and recommendations for future research.

The full report can be found here.
