The City of Copenhagen certainly seems to think so, as it seeks to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20% by the year 2015, and to be completely CO2 neutral by 2025. As traffic is responsible for around 20% of overall CO2 emissions, considerable emphasis is placed upon the environmental impacts of road transport and the measures that can help to reduce it, including their assessment.

Copenhagen has also followed this logic, investing in new high-tech traffic controllers that will be linked to a real-time remote monitoring system for smoother traffic flows and lower CO2 emissions. However before making any investment and policy, decision makers need to understand how effective these measures are and in which context and combination they have the most impact on the environment.

In view of this, the European Commission is supporting a joint effort between three regions – EU, US and Japan – to reach an agreement on a common assessment methodology for determining the impacts of ITS on energy efficiency and CO2 emissions. ECOSTAND believes that a standard methodology for assessing the impacts of ITS on CO2 emissions should have the following characteristics:

  • produce an accurate and fully reliable estimate of emissions
  • be able to compare different ITS solutions operating under the same circumstances
  • be cost effective and easy to use
  • be repeatable

But ECOSTAND would like to hear what YOU think! The EC-supported initiative leading the work on this methodology, ECOSTAND, will present its preliminary findings at the 2013 Annual Transportation Research Board Conference in Washington, USA, on 16 January 2013 afternoon (details can be requested to j.castermans@mail.ertico.com). This webinar aims to help you understand better the scope of ECOSTAND work, and for those present at TRB 2013, what will be discussed on 16 January and how you can contribute.

Speakers

  • Martijn de Kievit, TNO, ECOSTAND Co-ordinator
  • Steffen Rasmussen, Head of Traffic Design at City of Copenhagen
